Setting Yourself Up for Success

Recently, I made a complete course change with a career. I’ve spent years working jobs that deal with either retail or administrative type jobs. In both of these areas, I have my strengths and weaknesses. However, I was recently presented with an opportunity that would mean a complete change from both, but that would allow me to also use the strengths that I have in each of these areas, as well as learning from my past weaknesses.

My career change is joining the world of Sales. In a nutshell at the age of 45 (almost 46), I am joining a new industry and I’m starting an actual career. For a woman who has spent the last 20 years raising kids and working jobs, it feels very good to start a bonafide career. I will also tell you that I haven’t touched my blog in months and this career change seems like a great jumping off point to get back to my blog. Please follow along on my journey and see for yourself if I have any wisdom to offer you in the realm of setting yourself up for success, no matter what you do!

STEP 1 – When changing your career path seek knowledge at every opportunity. I have a husband who is very successful in the sales industry and he is my number one coach. I find podcasts that pertain to my industry and soak up all that they have to say. An example would be The Sales Evangelist podcast by Donald Kelly. I was amazed by all of the great information that this fellow salesperson has to offer. If you’d like to hear a bit of what he has to say, he can be found at www.thesalesevangelist.com.

STEP 2 – As you continue to seek knowledge, make sure that the company you are working for has a strong training plan in place to help you become successful at what you do. While some may enjoy just being thrown out into the middle of a lake and having to figure out how to get back to shore, other’s would rather have a plan that they can follow. Don’t’ be afraid to reach out to your fellow team members and ask for help if you have any questions. If you are a part of a great team, they will help.

STEP 3 – As my husband’s grandmother used to say “Listen to what everyone has to say and then do what you damn well please!” This is not bad advice at all, in fact, it’s great advice, listen to all of the training and team members advise, then figure out what works best for you.

All of my onboarding is complete and I started today with shadowing a fellow team member at an appointment, and I learned so much just listening. Next week, I will give an update on how I’m doing and offer you some insight into the progress I’m making along this new path.

Insomnia vs. Sweet Sleep

Dear Reader:

Have you ever dealt with insomnia? For anyone that has, they understand how truly frustrating it can be. There are many things we can go without and still survive, but sleep is not one of them. I have had insomnia issues that I don’t talk about too often for the last 17 years. A few months ago, it was so bad that I finally decided to talk to my doctor about it. Proof that I don’t ever talk about it much, I simply became used to suffering in silence. We came up with a game plan to catch up on some of the sleep that I was missing and it went well. However, that plan also included doubling the dose of my “sleep medication” for a period of 2 weeks. It helped, but my doctor doesn’t want me on the medication anymore. My resolve was to research some natural treatments to help and before you even ask, melatonin has never helped and doesn’t work. I dug into all the research that I could regarding essential oils and sleep. I began with diffusing lavender essential oil before bed, rubbing it on the bottom of my feet, my upper lip and my forehead. It worked for a little while, but it didn’t seem to be enough to keep me asleep. I ended up asking my doctor if he could extend my prescription one more time at the regular dose just for the nights that I was having trouble staying asleep. He complied, bless his heart. Knowing the ultimate goal is to no longer depend on that medication, I went back to the drawing board.

Understand, that I have always believed in taking the most natural approach for many types of ailments as possible. I’ve been taking this approach since my children were small (read my previous blog post about my children and their ear infections). I have been delving into the essential oils and the clear benefits and impact they have for not only myself but my family. Now, back to the insomnia issue after that brief break. I found a great recipe for a pillow spray using both lavender and cedarwood essential oils. I felt like a chemist creating the mixture in a 2oz. spray bottle, but it worked like wonders. I slept through the night and had a deep restful sleep. The essential oils get credit for helping me with my insomnia, sleep or lack thereof is no longer an issue for me. When something helps you with an issue that you have dealt with for so long, you share it. Then if you’re smart, you do more research and find other ways that essential oils can help. I’m on a quest and will be sharing in my journey along the way.

Finding my niche: Healthy Living and Encouragement

Hello everyone. I started this blog a few months ago with great intentions and then I got busy and set it on a shelf for another date. If you’ve missed me, great if not that’s ok too! I’ve been thinking a lot about trying to find a niche with my blogging and the most that I can come up with is the idea of encouraging people and doing my best to live a healthy lifestyle through all natural options.

When my kids were young, I remember countless trips to the doctor’s office for ear infections that would come right back after yet another round of antibiotics. Way back then, I would do my research to find natural ways to help them with ear infections, teething, chest congestion, etc. Once I decided to quit with the antibiotics (which are great when needed), all of a sudden the constant ear infections stopped and I believe that my children’s bodies figured out how to heal themselves. Was I neglecting my children? No, I was figuring out how to allow their God-given immune systems to work in the way they were created. There’s no magic pill that can be taken to combat every ailment out there, but there are natural things provided in nature that can help us become healthier and potentially keep us away from too many doctor’s visits. I still believe this way today, there are things found in nature that can help us, natural medicines that can bring relief. A few months back, I decided to try essential oils and became a distributor with Young Living. I can’t say enough about just the few that I have tried. I was having major issues with insomnia and choosing to diffuse lavender oil and rub it on the bottom of my feet helped before bed (I’ve been sleeping peacefully for the last several weeks when sleep had been evading me for years).  This is just one example of a benefit I experience using essential oils. My long-term goal is to become chemical free in my household, through thieves cleaner, dish soap, laundry detergent, toothpaste, etc.

As far as encouraging people, I hope that the example I live in my everyday life does that for me. Society is at odds with itself right now, we’re hearing all sorts of negative things on every side. Social media, news, media outlets, newspapers (for those that read them), political news stations, and the list goes on. It’s all negative, negative, negative and I’ve had just about enough. I’m going to do my part, to bring some encouragement and hope to the people that I connect with. It doesn’t take much to smile at people, be polite and treat others the way that you would want to be treated. We never know whose lives will be touched with just a smile. Find your rythmn in life, find what works for you and then live it.

Put Compassion First

Have you ever woken up and just had a crappy day from the moment your feet hit the ground? Well, guess what my friends, that was my morning. The purpose of this blog is not to complain, the purpose is to share a story with the world.

It started with waking up at 1:30 am not being able to go back to sleep until about 4:45 am. Then waking up to a stiff neck that was painful most of the morning. Did I mention that I had a staff meeting that I had to get to? In my grumpy state, I picked a fight with my best friend…If you’re a woman, please don’t try and tell me that you’ve never done that before, because that would be a lie. I then proceeded to leave the house frustrated and forgot my debit card (I wasn’t getting anywhere without needed gas in my car), only to discover that I forget more than just my debit card and had to come all the way back home. I was angry at myself for picking the fight with my beloved husband and even angrier that I had to come back home. Oh, by the way, I would be remiss to not share with you that my debit card had been in my wallet the entire time (insert angry face emoji here). I went to my meeting and felt like the biggest Debbie downer of them all. If anyone with the name Debbie read’s this, please forgive me for attributing something negative to your name (insert an I’m sorry emoji here). I then received some text communications, that began to chip away at my core. I had some opposition come at me today. All in all, it was a crappy morning. But things got better!!!

But things got better!!! I had 4 people today, listen to me say what I needed to say and then they just loved me right where I was at, they poured wisdom and love into that core that had been shattering and God used their love like glue to mend some of those broken pieces. And the story is not yet over.

After receiving the healing that I needed from their words, I left work to run a few errands and then head home for the rest of the day. Then the icing on the cake of my crappy morning occurred (insert dramatic music here). Driving down a typically busy street in my home town, I put on my breaks to prevent hitting the car that abruptly came to a stop in front of me, whew, I didn’t hit them. However, the car behind me did hit me and I mean hard. I want you to think for a moment about the society we live in today? Are you thinking? It’s pretty up in your face right now – every where. Now, insert the phrase “but God” and I’m being serious, not taking the Lord’s name in vain. Remember, I just left my work feeling blessed because of the 4 people that spoke into my life this morning. I didn’t want to stop in the middle of the busy street and draw attention to anything, so I called my husband and said, babe, I’ve just been hit. I told him I was fine, what my current destination was and hung up the phone. The car that hit me, seemed to understand what I was doing as I pulled into the local Office Max parking lot. With trepidation, I got out of my car as he pulled up behind. I checked my car and there wasn’t even a dent ( I drive a #Subaru). You could see low on the bumper where some of his red racing stripes smudged the bumper, but no visible damage was on either car. I walked up to the young men, who appeared to be about the age of my two son’s and he looked scared. In my secret prayer place (inside my head), I asked God that despite the day I had, would He allow me to be a blessing to this scared young man. We chatted for a minute, with us both asking each other if we were ok and then I looked at him and smiled. I said to him,  “you’re okay and I’m okay”, I gave him a high five which stunned him and told him to have a blessed day. Please do not come at me and tell me that we should have exchanged paperwork because I wasn’t feeling that. I was looking into the eyes of a scared young man and just wanted to be kind. The same way that I would want someone to show compassion to any of my grown children. I heard somewhere deep in my heart these words…Compassion First. The thought occurred to me that he could have yelled, heck I could have yelled, but don’t we already see enough of that in the world? I wanted to be kind, after all, the only one to blame for my bad day was me, not him. If I could start a movement that would spread like a disease, it would be the #putcompassionfirst movement. I would hope that everyone in the world would get infected with it, be so sick with it that simply began to spew compassion every where that they went.

Society is imploding right now, and I will not be someone who adds to it. I love people and proceeded to chat with complete strangers while I was getting a pedicure. My crappy day turned out alright. Everyone has stuff going on, none of us really know what the person next to us is going through. Don’t be afraid to share a simple story. My story was not to brag or to puff myself up, my story was to show that opportunities present themselves and we need to be ready to see them and act on them, no matter how crappy our days may have started out.

I challenge you to show compassion, even at a time when you’re really not feeling it. Help me spread the disease of compassion, I promise you it will turn your day around and put a smile on your face. I also challenge you to be transparent, so people don’t feel so alone in this great big world. Be blessed my readers, my recent absence from my blog is serving a purpose that is bigger than myself.

At the young of age of 20, I married and started my family with my husband. The dream in my heart was to have a family of my own. God not only saw fit to bring my dream to fruition, but he gave me the greatest husband a woman could ever dream of having along with three phenomenal children who are now adults. The one thing I let go of at that time was a college education. I didn’t give it a second thought for another 21 years. Then at the age of 41, I saw a movie many are familiar with called The Bucket List and at the very top of my list was earning a college degree. Not because I planned on kicking the bucket anytime soon, but because I saw the idea of a bucket list as a great opportunity to write down goals and get them accomplished. I write this blog today at the age of 45 and can share with you that I have now completed 4 years of education that will grant me a well-earned bachelor’s degree in a few short weeks. The years may pass quickly, but never let anyone tell you that you are too old to accomplish anything that you set your mind to. If you are reading this, I challenge you to create a Bucket List of goals and dreams. I caution you with your priorities. Don’t let it be the sole thing you focus on or let it become unimportant. Instead, give it the proper place in your life and plan on smiling at every opportunity you have to check another item off of the list you have created.

The years may pass quickly, but never let anyone tell you that you are too old to accomplish anything that you set your mind to. If you are reading this, I challenge you to create a “Bucket List” of goals and dreams. Then set about to check them off of your list. Building a Blog, one bite at a time.

I’ve read a few articles on blogging and I have to say that today I’m falling short. My last blog post was Saturday, July 29, 2017. It was only my 4th blog, which means I’m in no way an expert, yet! What it does mean is that just like my life, I am a constant work in progress. While my plan was to blog every single day, that is just not reality right now. Don’t get me wrong, I can come close and eventually will hit the mark but patience is key for everything, including my quest to become a blogger.

I’m working on finding inspiration in everything, which will be the topic of my next blog. In the meantime, I wish everyone the best and have a great rest of your week. I will leave you with this:

It is my belief that our thought life can be a real pest. It can either drive us just about crazy running non-stop before bed or during the day or we need to learn to use it to our benefit. Thoughts can either keep us on track with projects or completely derail us, causing major damage along the way. Isn’t it obvious in just the first few sentences how our thoughts can be a pest? My mind runs constantly and that is okay to a degree, then I have to find ways to tame the pest that my thoughts can be.

One resource I use is an app on my iPhone and iPad called Cozi Family Organizer which can be found at www.cozi.com. This phone application has turned out to be a great resource for both my husband and me. While its purpose is a family resource, our children are adults now so we use this application between the two of us and it works out great. When either of us adds things to the calendar, we both can see it and there is also a shared shopping list and to-do list. Why do I mention this in this post, let me give you an example: I’m getting ready to run errands for the day, or open up my web browser and contemplate my next blog post and I remember that I need something from the store – (enter the “pest” that are my thoughts) – I open my Cozi account and put the items on the list. The simple act of doing that plucks that “pest” out of my mind and I continue on with what I was doing. It also works when making sure that I plug all of my activities, events or appointments into the calendar. It saves me from double-booking things and looking like a complete flake. This is one of the tools I use that keep my thoughts from running a muck in my brain.

I think what I am trying to propose here is that when I read the daily prompt for pest and the offer to use it in a blog, inspiration struck. I knew what I considered to be a pest and wanted to write about it.
